IndyCar 500 Reddit fans missed out on the official start of summer this year as the Indy 500 was cancelled back in March when the 2020 IndyCar season was suspended. Thankfully though, IndyCar racing resumed in June and this weekend we’ll finally get to see the 104th running of the Indy 500.

The Indianapolis 500 takes its name from the 500 miles of track that 33 Indy Cars will cover over the course of 200, 2.5 mile laps. The Indy 500 is one of the most famous auto races in the world and was first held in 1911. Since then the race has remained mostly unchanged and has been held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana.
While attendance at this year’s race was initially going to be limited to 25 per cent capacity, this idea was scrapped at the beginning of this month due to a steep increase of COVID cases in Marion County, Indiana where the Indy 500 is held. This will mark the first time in the event’s over 100 year history that the race will be run without fans.
Each driver is slated to make one four-lap qualifying run for this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in Speedway, Indiana.
Drivers will have the option to make additional attempts by going in the “Fast Lane” and withdrawing their previous attempts, or by going to the tail end of the regular line and retaining their initial speeds.
The top nine drivers at the end of the session will advance to Sunday afternoon’s Fast Nine Shootout, while the other 24 are slated to line up from row four through row 11 from positions 10th through 33rd for next Sunday’s race. There will be no bumping for this race, as there are only 33 drivers entered.
Last year, Spencer Pigot topped this qualifying session driving for Ed Carpenter Racing before going on to qualify in third place in the Fast Nine Shootout behind teammate and team owner Ed Carpenter in second and race polesitter Simon Pagenaud of Team Penske.
Follow along with our live updates of Saturday qualifying to see who will vie for the pole position on Sunday afternoon and who will start where throughout the rest of the field in the 104th running of the Indy 500.
The Fast Nine Shootout is set to be broadcast live from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on NBC and NBC Sports Gold from 1:15 p.m. ET to 2:15 p.m. ET tomorrow afternoon, and the race itself is set to be broadcast live on NBC next Sunday, August 23 beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET. The race is scheduled to begin at roughly 2:30 p.m. ET.
